Disaster Response

Disaster Response

There's no greater example of Commissioner Doak's commitment to serving the people of Oklahoma than the Insurance Department's strong response to recent tornados across the state. The Department's disaster response teams were on the ground for weeks, educating citizens and assisting with insurance related complaints, delays and disputes. Commissioner Doak has devoted many days and hours to personally leading the efforts on-site, speaking at town-hall style meetings and even helping victims with insurance claims, right in their own front yards. In all, more than 87,000 storm-related insurance claims were filed with total payments over $1 billon.

This strong response was not by accident. It resulted from long term planning implemented by Commissioner Doak. Immediately upon taking office, Doak established a catastrophe team to respond to disasters, and he launched Oklahoma's first National Tornado Summit and Domestic Insurance Conference. Today, Oklahoma's preparation and disaster response plans are national models, and numerous state insurance commissioners and officials have visited Oklahoma to learn about our industry best practices.
